somehow this quirky little book provided the perfect whimsical escape from the monotony of capitalism, filled to the brim with surrealist humor and captivating prose (4.5 stars)

although i didn’t necessarily fall in love with the main character, i can say that this is a good read for anyone grappling with late stage capitalism and defining their value by their career. it has a pleasant level of absurdity, and leichter does such a wonderful job of playing with language and literary devices in this novel. i just wish i cared more about the main character. leichter neglects to include any characterization of the main character. this is done intentionally, but the unintended side effect is that it was hard to become invested in the main character at all. her surrealist experiences and the absurdity of the plot are the primary focus of this novel, so if you are someone who likes to emotionally invest in the main character of a novel (like me), this one is just hard to get into.

Admittedly this is not my genre, but there are definitely flashes of brilliance here. The whole logic of the book follows like a stress dream I would have - some weirdly funny bits, the logical connection of unrelated things, and then a sudden profound realization of meaning. I might have enjoyed this more if I weren't self-isolating already feeling like the logic of the universe was a little more nightmarish than I had imagined. If you are into surrealist writing, you will probably enjoy this. If you are trying to keep you feet on the ground in an unsteady moment, this might not help.
