What a freakin’ adorable book! Clever concept for dual POV (emails on one side and narration on the other). It was the sweetest thing I’ve read in a while.
I did not expect to enjoy this one as much as I did. Pleasantly surprised.
No sex. Lots of language.

i started this book picturing a younger me fantasizing over fangirl. i expected to be mildly disappointed by the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia and creeped out by the premise. instead i found myself surprising endeared to the characters and smiling for them by the end. what a perfectly strange y2k romance <3
this book has actually destroyed me a little bit. i love the ending - the last lines are actually a masterpiece. it’s definitely one of my favourite romances ever; don’t think you can get more slow burn than this, seeing as they meet so late into the book (like… LATE late)
it kinda ended up reminding me of ‘the kangaroo communiqué’, if only that story wasn’t really weird and creepy.
it definitely took me a while to realise the precise time setting of the book, which was the precipice of 2000 - weird to think that was 22 years ago?? come to think of it, that’s when my parents met. it feels trivial to say it was set just a bit ago when i wasn’t even a vague figment of imagination when it was set (1999; written in 2011 i think) - to reduce my entire inception and existence to a few years ago - it’s funny how long the moments feel but time flies when you’ve already lived it all.
what was so cool is that the man (lincoln) is actually the main character. ofc you get dual pov books where you get to hear the man’s thoughs, and while you do hear the woman’s (beth’s) pov, it’s only in her emails, so not really a true pov. i don’t think i’ve ever read a romance with a male narrator before!
what’s most striking about the book is the deceptively complex relationships/ characters that are crafted, especially when there are no big plot devices driving action or decisions under duress - it kind of makes you think about how much of ourselves comes up to the surface through the minutiae of our lives. the chapters also end with some pretty pithy lines that just add so much complexity without overshadowing other aspects of the story.
cant recommend this book enough :))

This quote:
“And cried. I must have looked wildly pathetic because he said, “I have some French fries in there if you want them.” I thought that was such a weird thing to offer, but frankly, I’m exactly the sort of person to be comforted by French fries, so I ate them.”
made me laugh out loud.
Other than that, this book was pretty good. Not the best, not the worst. Characters were likable but not lovable.

Lovely book!! Man I love Rainbow more and more with every word I read from her. I really loved this book. A cute, light read with a nice happy ending if that's what you're looking for. :)
I enjoyed this novel. It was fascinating to have the main character in a romance be male and I also thoroughly enjoyed reading Beth & Jennifer's emails along side Lincoln.
