I almost DNFed the book because the first few chapters were overly violent and graphic which I was not expecting. I should have checked trigger warnings which I didn’t do beforehand. But I pushed through it and really enjoyed the world building, character interactions and just really interested in the story. I am excited to start the next book.
Trigger warnings: on page r*pe of side character and off page infant death

Fantastic from start to finish. Charlaine Harris strikes gold again!
I wish there'd been less romance, but I've felt that way about several books lately, so maybe I'm just becoming more prudish as I approach middle age. Despite that, the story was an action-packed page-turner full of complex characters, and I THOROUGHLY enjoyed the western/fantasy crossover elements. (For another, see Walk on Earth a Stranger by Rae Carson [Gold Seer Trilogy #1].)
Strong, young (19), female protagonist. I look forward to sequels!

I really like Charlaine Harris and this was another fun world to fall into - she really builds you up to that final series of decisions. I picked this one up at random from my library after enjoying the sookie stackhouse series and I wasn’t disappointed. This is a fast easy read that keeps you engaged. Gunnie Rose is another young protagonists but we don’t really feel it in her maturity. Maybe I just identify with women with ptsd and a sassy ass attitude.
Very different from the Sookie series, but very enjoyable in its own right. It was a fun caper. I like gunnie Lizbeth Rose and I will continue the series.

In a bit of an illogical alternate world where it seems FDR was assassinated and the US fell apart. Yet, if that's what did it, how did the Russian royalty and White Army take over the West Coast in 1918?
Gunnie Rose is a shooter in a crew helping people move up from what Mexico conquered to the Midwest. Her crew is killed, but then she immediately hooks up with some Russian magicians on the trial of some other folks. It's a nice romp and a fun main character. The problem is too many plot holes. I'll only mention one. The first time she sees the pair's car, she finds out its protected by spells so people can't touch it. Then, not many pages later, somebody takes off the oil cap under the car -- without a problem. Ooops.
A fun book with too many problems for a five. I'll still give it four.

Fantastic beginning to a series. I wasn’t sure where might go at the end so it felt a tad anticlimactic but maybe the next book will let me know.
