I love Sophie's writing.
Characters are always tough and awesome. This one is no exception, my only complaint is I wish it was much longer... It was over WAY to soon.

I just finished reading this, my first Sophie Lark book and all I have to say is that I'm impressed.

I don't read a lot of mafia and MC romance novels because most of the time the heroines are almost always a damsel in distress , and I don't mean to offend anyone (authors or readers) if that's something they enjoy or don't mind seeing.

From watching people's favorite books of 2021 on booktube, I saw Sophie Lark's books featured on those lists so many times. So I gave in to curiosity and searched which books [and series] of hers I'd be comfortable reading. And then to top it off, I've heard in one of the videos that this author writes strong and independent heroines and it was perfect!

Obviously, as I've said, I'm genuinely surprised and impressed with this book. I don't regret picking it up at all and I must admit that I am now a bit hooked. A lot of people have already said that these kinds of books are addicting to read and I find myself agreeing with that.

This book is so fast-paced and action-packed that I found myself at the edge of my seat anticipating what's to come. Each turn of the page is nailbiting. The plot is easy to follow and understand and because it goes directly to the heart of the story, there's no dull moment.

I enjoyed Sloane. She's very formidable and a woman who knows what she wants. She's also smart, she is aware of both her strengths and weaknesses and is not afraid to show vulnerability and fear. I admire how the author wrote her -- she's blunt and honest, and she's not a pushover. Sloane is equal in almost every aspect to Ivan, her love interest in this book.

It was interesting to see how effective the villain the author wrote this book is. He was conniving and convincing in his evilness that I was feeling hatred towards him. I've come across villains in books that have managed to get emotions out of me, but this is by far the best out of all. I was so annoyed by his smugness and I kept wishing I was with the characters so I can beat him up as well.

However, I will have to disagree with this being a mafia romance. It was very insta-love and mostly lust-driven that I didn't find it romantic at all. Of course, the chemistry between Sloane and Ivan was unpalpable and there were entertaining moments, but for the most part, the attraction was immediate and the relationship was so chill. The level of steaminess is fitting to prove the chemistry of these two characters and how physically compatible they are.

So the 4-star rating has more to do with the plot and how I felt reading the action within the book. The romance for me was not there, maybe I'm just cliche when it comes to how I want the romance to go in the books I read, but nonetheless, I didn't rate this for that.

I am definitely surprising myself this 2022 since I am looking forward to reading more of her books [starting after I write this review]. Sending my virtual thanks to all of those who spoke highly of her book, your praises pushed me to read this, and to the author itself for writing a book that ignited a spark in me to pick up more books like this.
