This was crazy. Everyone was just being abused and dying for 300+ pages and then maybe there was a happy ish ending for 2 characters only in the last 15 pages? I really don’t think Emily Brontë was well. That was not pleasant or enjoyable to read. It was unique though I’ll give her that. I bet people really were not a fan of a woman writing like this in her time.

I would not read again but am glad I read it just for context in the world since it’s such a notable book and is interesting to think about in context of the Brontë sisters lives.

So much to think about in this truly incredible but truly distressing novel. That Emily Brontë wrote all of this in her 20s and published it at 30, right before her death, is truly astounding. I am hardly smart enough to convey my thoughts appropriately, but will say this: there are elements of this book that will stay with me for a long, long time. "I love my murderer, but yours? How can I?" will be chief among the quotes that sticks like a thorn in my brain. While not the most dramatic of Heathcliffe and Cathy’s words, it goes a long way to helping the reader understand that love and hatred are one and the same in this novel.
