Lale and Gita's story is one that - with a quiet, dignified urgency - necessitated telling and necessitates reading - by us all... As the author suggests, it is a tale of history and humanity, or rather, humanity and history - at its abject worst and abolute finest.
The writing is not the star here (had it been or had it at least reached the level of the subject matter and narrative, my rating would doubtless have been five stars); rather the story and characters are.
On a macro level, read it to be firmly and forever reminded of a period of history that must not be repeated in any part of our world nor to any one of its peoples. On a micro level, read it to recognize the resilience of the human spirit and of the profound power of love.

This is essentially a love story, not an honest account of the atrocities which occurred in the concentration camps.
This was an easy, unchallenging read which is at odds with the subject matter. I finished feeling that if a writer choses a subject matter such as this, then they ought not to trivialise the events that occurred. They should write unflinchingly about the horrors, not brush over them in a sentence or two.
The book did however prompt me to do some extra reading around the central characters from original source material.

Ternyata karakter dari buku ini based on real people survivor dari kamp Auschwitz-Birkenau, dan ceritanya kemungkinan besar sesuai cerita mereka dengan sedikit sentuhan fiksi.
Ceritanya sangat sangat bagus apalagi belakangan lagi suka fiksi sejarah dengan tema peperangan. Cuma entah kenapa penulisannya could be better, kayak seharusnya bisa digali lagi untuk bisa lebih detail dan gak terkesan dry.
Tadinya mikir ada beberapa part yang kayanya ga mungkin terjadi atau kayak “kok bisa semudah itu”, tapi pas tau ini based on real eventnya para penyintas well berarti emang seperti itu ceritanya.
Still a good read!

I feel like I have seen the pictures of the lovers in another book but can't remember where.
Reading these stories are painful, but this one made me feel like I was actually travelling back and forth with the tattooist, and I started checking the faces of the prisoners as well, hoping to see her. I'm glad he got to tell his story his way. He survived, all over again, and so did she.
