I have to say... I wasn't expecting much from this book when I first initially started it but by the end I was engrossed and fully decided that I needed the rest of the series.

It first started our along similar lines as A Court of Thorns and Roses but as it progressed it strayed into its own plot line.

Estrella has a hard life but quickly learns that she won't let a man rule her life anymore. I admire this in her as she has the strength to stand up to her abuser first and then later against her brother.

Caelum is stunning. I love Caelum. From the beginning he always showed that he was racy, sassy and protective of her but he was sweet, understanding and fully appreciative of her. Ha ha... I was so naive......

Read it and when you get to the end and the plot twist kicks your ass as well, come talk to me.

Needs trigger warnings for abuse, sexual assault, religion-based abuse. It is literally all that is described for the first hour and I’ve given up.

It seems as though the author didn't plot out the book ahead of time and made the decision of who the male love interest was about 75% of the way through writing it, but then didn't go back and add in foreshadowing. It didn't feel earned, and then the ending of the book didn't feel earned either. Super unsatisfying.

I genuinely don’t like leaving bad reviews for books without listing some positives but I can’t with this one.

The characters were rather boring and repetitive. No one had a single ounce of character development.
This is the first book in my life where I hated every single character that was introduced.

On top of that the Main character lets her love interest be semi-abusive to her the whole time. He was also extremely misogynistic. She acts like he’s giving her a choice which is repeatedly said in the book when he does not respect her privacy in the slightest. Also once she’s “his” touches her constantly without her permission. It’s disgusting, and I get that
He’s bad in the end, but it should’ve been highly known before that by how he acted. how this book normalized immediate abuse made me so uneasy. There was no build up, it was just there.

This book tried to have all the loved tropes of
-touch her and I’ll kill you
-strong /independent protagonist

It was not there.

All in all, nothing was fleshed out enough. For a long book, it was barebones and Extremely predictable.

I read 1/3 of the book and it just feels to me like the mc has a weird trauma kink, because like every single man she encounters wants to have sex with her and at the same time, basically nothing interesting had happened
