You cannot force empathy. You can only share your truth and hope your story strikes a chord in others. And how amazing to have that truth shared by a writer of Roxane Gay's caliber. I will never look at another person of a different size and shape in the same way again. Hopefully I will simply see fellow souls just trying to navigate our way through this harsh and beautiful existence.

Roxane writes unashamedly about the realities of living as a woman of size in a fatphobic world, while revealing the events in her life that prompted her to actively gain weight. She takes the reader through the different stages of her life, and the struggles she had/has loving herself, and comes to the understanding that she is worthy of being loved and saving herself. Most poignant quote: "....the bigger you are, the smaller your world becomes."

Whew. What a memoir. In this book Roxane really pulls back the curtains to let us see into her life, her past, and her inner thoughts. I feel like it should be a required reading for everyone. I feel it has given me priceless insight into the lives of some of the people of love, as well as made me feel fired up about creating a society where people in all bodies can navigate without shame. It can be hard to read, but it’s an important read. I couldn’t recommend it enough.
Brutally honest and eye opening. Wonderfully written.
