Vanskelig å sette stjerner, føler lissom at det kreves at jeg skal sette stjerner på forfatterens levde liv og ikke boka, noe som jo, når jeg tenker meg om, må bety at forfatteren kommer ganske under huden på meg med denne. OK, fire. Under tvil. Vil uansett lese alt Roxane Gay har skrevet.
Having read many of Roxane Gay's articles and blog posts, some of the material in this memoir was familiar. But what most struck me about the book was how much Gay tried to be kind to herself and to those around her as she told her story. This was an insightful and moving read.
I have loved every single piece of writing I read by Roxane Gay. "Hunger" has been on my reading list for years and it did not disappoint. The book will be heart breaking if your heart isn't already broken. Its honesty is raw yet beautifully put. And it is impossible not to empathise with Gay.
I also think this is one of the books that truly deserve to be listened to as an audiobook because it is read by the author.

the best book I’ve read in a long time. totally heartbreaking, brilliantly relatable & real, so important. this is required reading for anyone who has a body, especially a female body.
"I want to look good. I want to feel good. I want to be beautiful in this body I am in. The story of my life is wanting, hungering, for what I cannot have or, perhaps, wanting what I dare not allow myself to have."
This quote, amongst so many others, resonated with me. Chapter 57 resonated with me. Such a powerful, beautiful memoir of Roxane Gay's life in her super morbidly obese body.
A devastatingly personal book, uncomfortable to read and I imagine even harder to write.
Heart-rending without being overly dramatic. Wonderful writing.
I’ve never had someone to relate to with respect to living in this world as a big person—I’m very grateful just to hear/read someone else’s account that mirrors my own in many ways. On a broader perspective, this book flew by for me, read/listened to it in its entirety in 1 day. Loved the audiobook read in the author’s own voice. The candid accounts of everyday life are what I never knew I needed to hear—just to know I’m not alone. Her story beyond a “big body” is full of challenges but told through the lense of brutal honesty—honesty that somehow brings a deeper truth to each situation.
