DID NOT FINISH: 53%

The pacing felt oddly fast and slow at the same time. Things happened quickly, characters figured things out fast, but little happened. I expected this book to be about Prince Allen and High King Sarrica reluctantly falling in love, but it was mostly an adventure book. Halfway in, and the two had hardly spent any time together. I wasn’t very interested in Allen going off on his own and all the issues going on back in Harken. I wanted more interactions between the two and was disappointed they split ways so early on.

Fabulous book. Only complaint was that Sarrica's kids absolutely did not matter and weren’t characters so why were they there? The kids could have been a wonderful addition to the book, but we never actually saw them interact with anyone.

0,1 star.

At first, I was going to write a lengthy review with all of my complaints... But I realised I was, again, being stupid (because I was already dumb enough to force myself to finish this book). And, honestly, this book has already taken too much of my time (and my money).

I will just say this: it is the worse piece of writing I have ever read in its entirety – including fanfictions, contracts, policies and instruction manuals. And I mean this in: quality of writing-wise, entertainment-wise, description-wise, character development-wise, plot-wise… Any “wise” you can think of…

And, just to be clear, this is not as good as the other books I gave 1 star. This book receives this rating because there isn’t a lower one available.

If I, a person who literally DNF’ed nearly every fantasy book I have ever tried to read, gave this one five stars, it’s good. In my head, Sarrica is Jason Momoa and you cannot convince me otherwise.

I love Megan Derr's world.

While the romance is on the light side, the story is involved and entertaining.

For a short free read this is a pleasant entertaining story without need of padding (no sex)

DID NOT FINISH

I immediatelydropped this book after Allen had a one night stand with Rene despite knowing that Tara and Rene were a couple....lost all respect to Allen cause I loved his personality. It's such a shame because I was loving this book from the beginning.....

Hate to be brutal but I found this book to be fairly poorly written. Most of the characters, relationships and plot in the book fell flat for me and quite honestly the book itself could use another round of proper editing. Possibly a personal taste on this matter as well but the whole casual unexplained male pregnancy part of the world took me out of the story more than anything.

I absolutely adore Megan Derr as an author. She writes perfect queer-normative fantasy worlds like she's inside my heart making my dreams come true without me even knowing exactly what will be perfect. Her characters are wonderful and compelling, I love them. And the theme of second love, the struggles that come with navigating it. Everything about this book was realistically, enticingly complex. It's just full of so much good stuff. I'm so happy tbh.
