I enjoyed the characters and how alive they felt, the connections and friendships were sweet (and incredibly cheesy at times lol.)The worldbuilding and history were fascinating and I was deeply engrossed. But my first and main gripe is that the romance came off as stilted to me. I was excepting a slow burn and some enemies to lovers but it didn't deliver. They just suddenly were in love? One sex scene and they were head over heels. Where's the precious growth? I was hoping for a trilogy where they take a course of a second book and even the third to develop their relationship.
My second gripe is that the author has a very high tendency to describe every single outfit! My god! I mean the outfits were stunning and I love the image of them very much but it was exasperating to see it described in detail in EVERY single chapter.
My third gripe that comes back to my first is that I would've loved more on this couple. The plot had so much more to deliver for them and instead it was chopped and finalized.
Also, I'm still very much confused by Nyle, were they trans?? I mean the pregnancy?? and the details were so vague... Anyway, still, an enjoyable story but it disappointed me in some aspects.

I think if I was in a bit of a different mood I would probably finish the novel or read more than the point I got to (I abandoned at 24%), but I just could not care about the characters, or the plot. There was no tension for me, and I suddenly found myself more interested in the secondary characters so I decided to not to the effort and just save myself some more of this narration/characters.
Absolutely lovely slow burn romance with a wonderful cast of secondary characters. I adored the group of friends, but I especially loved Sarrica and Lesto's friendship because they've got that wonderful needling, bantering thing going on that only the best of friends can do.
The only thing that's kind of odd is there almost seems to be a third gender. Not exactly separate from the other two, but…there's a couple of instances where two people of the same gender have biological children. I have the feeling that the author was trying to do away with the need of having one man and one women to procreate - thereby getting rid of things like the (male) High King needing a female consort to produce heirs. This opens up plenty of chances to not have arranged marriages always be between two people of the opposite gender. I do like the idea, as odd as it is (maybe that's why I like it) - but it's never explained. I don't know if they were supposed to be trans or intersex (is that the right term?) or if we don't even currently have a proper way to refer to them. It would have been easy to just give a little mention of how this is possible (he was born in the wrong body - for example) but there's no mention at all. This would have been the perfect opportunity to delve deeper into this culture and this world and it was just a little disappointing to me that it's all left up to reader to try to figure out how this is even possible.

Now in audio, I think it has a great plot, but I could have done without romance, I honestly don’t get the MCs in love.
Plot and worldbuilding, 4.5 stars, minus 2 for a loveaffair I can’t believe in. Rounded up to 3.

This books isnt for me. The writing was nice and liked the worldbuilding. But the characters not so much, one has kids and the other sleeps around. Not my kind of love story.
