Despite having seen both of the films, I've never read any of the Paddington books before, so this was a first for me. He's such a sweetheart and always kind to everyone he meets. I especially loved his friendship with Mr Gruber, and reading about the mischief he gets up to!

I really can't get used to Modern Paddington. It tries to blend the charm of Classic Paddington in the late 1950s/early 1960s with the world as it is currently and it just doesn't work for me. The stories used to be much simpler, and were just a matter of Paddington misunderstanding something. The majority of the stories in this volume, felt far too convoluted and contrived for Paddington stories. I'll still carry on reading the Paddington books, but they're not what they were.
I think of Paddington as autistic; he is unable to grasp any figures of speech, idioms, common phrases, nuances, or sarcasm and always takes what's said literally, which what gets him into his capers. Paddington usually comes out of it oblivious, and without learning anything from it. It's only the family who seem to know how to speak to Paddington clearly and directly (especially Mrs. Bird), and those Paddington stories usually end up in a giant mess because Paddington has tried something, very earnestly and with good intention, and it's all ended up going wrong (e.g. the 'Spring-cleaning' story in this book).
The redeeming feature of Modern Paddington is the art by R.W. Alley. It's simply lovely, and Alley's Paddington is adorable. I would take him home!
