Wade is an incel, he’s not a ‘nice guy’. His obsession with women is strange and had the romance subplot be removed entirely I MAY have given this a 5 star rating.

I absolute adored this, I couldn’t put it down, every page and word made me want to know what was going to happen. The whole concept was perfect and all of the little and sometimes not so little nods to the 80s and nerd culture were awesome.

Wow! I have not read a book that was so much fun in a long time. I'm obviously late to the party - this was released in 2011, and the sequel just came out. I want to watch the movie and check out the sequel soon!

This is set in an incredibly dystopic future of climate disasters and social breakdown. Most people, including Wade Watts, escape by spending most of their time logged into OASIS, an immersive virtual reality. Wade is a poor high schooler, living in an overcrowded stack of trailers. He attends high school via OASIS, and in his free time he's a 'gunter' - an egg hunter searching for the easter egg left by the creator of OASIS. Whoever finds this egg will inherit the creator's wealth and control of the company. The creator was obsessed with classic video games and the '80s, so the book is full of references to those things. I know next to nothing about the '80s and have just a casual knowledge of video games, and I still enjoyed and understood it - so if you don't know much about those either, don't let that stop you.

The story alternates between epic adventures in OASIS and the grim reality of the real world. There are evil corporations, friendships & romances, and daring escapes. The tension and pacing is excellent - I was engrossed. It sometimes stretched my suspension of disbelief - there are quite a few things that ended up just too perfect, such as his conveniently problem-free escape from IOI, or how it turns out with Art3mis - luck really goes his way. But who cares, it was so fun.

I expect there could be a lot of discussion and critique of many of the topics in this book - including the pros and cons of being so hyper online, the dystopia itself and its relationship with the virtual reality, gender, and race. I look forward to reading more thoughts and reviews. And I recommend this as a really fun book!
