Yuan does a fantastic job in this book explaining how to handle the increasing secular interest in sexuality as a Christian. He explains how he thinks it is best to handle different situations one can have with gay christians and non christians. The part of this book that really stuck out to me that is different than others on this topic is he challenges the reader to answer questions like Jesus did, with more questions. For example if someone asks you if gay people are going to hell, use this to start a spiritual conversation with them. Ask them “What does it mean to be gay?” and “Who do you think deserves to go to hell?”

1.5 Stars?

I expected a more broad exploration of sexuality and how to live it out in a gospel-centered way, apart from the author's personal experience with being gay and choosing celibacy. Which is a valid experience to write about, the book just seemed to be advertised as more encompassing.

I also didn't agree with his theology of original sin, among other ways he interpreted scripture. Sometimes he had excellent hermeneutic skills, while other times his logic was circular or he attempted to make situational teachings into all-encompassing principles. There was just a lot of black and white language with some very gray, nuanced topics. I got the sense often that his occasional harsh tone was almost directed toward himself, trying to convince himself of the truth of what he was saying. Which, there are well-researched scholars who reach different conclusions on these topics, so if he wanted to find stronger arguments that didn't require such "tough love," he could.

I did appreciate his advocacy for showing love and true kinship with the LGBTQ community in the last few chapters.

I love Christopher Yuan, and have had the pleasure of meeting him twice. I think he has such amazing insight and compassion and the greatest advice to share on the topic of sexuality from a biblical perspective. This book is very helpful and a must read as we live in the times that we do, when sexuality is being flaunted and lifted up as something it was never designed to be.

I didn’t give it 5 stars because there was a little bit too much reformed theology coming out of it for my liking.

I will always be endlessly thankful to Dr. Yuan for the universalizing effect of his theology of sexuality. It’s changed my life a number of times.

Honestly, I’d like to say parts of this book were a bit too black and white, and maybe they were. Yet he’s been through it all and truly has an incredible faith that I look up to. So even though there’s a lot in here that I’d like to avoid or ignore, I’m thankful that he is an author willing to push me toward obedience.
