Between Shoko and Naoka, I think Dumbledore said it best:

Wasn't a fan of this volume. The best parts are when Shoya and Shoko spend time together. Some old-new characters were introduced, rounding out the cast a bit, so I'm interested to see where the story goes, even though this was a rough patch.

Also, Shoko still has gotten barely any development... and I wish there was translation of the sign language she uses so that we knew what she was saying. (It'd be one thing if the actual sign language was represented but not translated, but the artwork doesn't actually depict the movements in a way that even a reader who knows the language would be able to interpret.)

TW: ableism, bullying, fatphobia

I'm glad the main character isn't a jerk anymore. I'm glad he is trying to make up for his terrible behavior.

Love where this story is headed. It's also a great way to learn about different cultural perceptions of people in the deaf community.

I love this story. The story moves in an surprising pathway. This is why I love to read foreign works. Most often with American authors, I figure out what is going to happen which leaves me feeling unsatisfied in the end. Japanese mangakas may lull me into passive reading with their art but their stories always take a twist I cannot see coming. They will also bravely go into territory that might be considered too bold or tabu in western writing. This is one of those stories. The level of bullying in volumes one and two were shocking and where the story goes from there is unexpected. This manga has been nominated for the 2016 Will Eisner Comic Industry Award for International Material-Asia. I sincerely hope it wins!
