I needed a bit of a palate cleanser after the bitter bile All the Bright Places left in my throat and, as I posted my review for that book, I checked my e-mail and was incredibly grateful to find Kasie West's name in my inbox, here to let me know it was going to be okay, that palate cleanser I so badly needed was available to rent on Overdrive.

From reading the descriptions for her books and then reading By Your Side last week, I've come to believe Kasie West is the perfect author to turn to for a quick and cute little book. It's kind of the book equivalent of a chick flick romcom: not super deep, not very long, and perfect for when you just want to enjoy a little fluff. Plus, almost all West's books are available on Overdrive or through the library as discs, so they're free for me.

I definitely liked By Your Side a lot more than this, but this was cute enough. I liked the relationship Caymen had with her mother and liked that I could feel how strained it had become even though I didn't actually know what it used to be like. I also thought Xander and Caymen were really cute and thought their romance was sweet.

This was just good for wasting away my shift with, just fun enough to hold my attention and get me to care enough to finish, but not much else more than that, though still fun.

In typical YA fashion, we find our heroine down and out, with money problems and daddy issues to boot, Manning a store of porcelain dolls. She helps out her mother to the detriment of her social life and schooling. Then she meets a dashing young rich lad and then we are off to the races.

Dislikes:
~Her name is ridiculous and it’s a trope in and of itself, because these YA novels always seem to have some special girl with a weird name.
~She doesn’t seem to make her own decisions or run anything in her life. At times, I found myself getting upset with her because she was allowing her friends to force her into situations that she categorically refused.
~She is the queen of jumping to conclusions and assuming way more than I would think a normal person would.
~She consistently thinks of witty remarks, remarks that would reveal her true feelings and instead says nothing. Being passive and letting life just happen.
~I hated Skye and Henry and Mason. They were this Greek chorus of misfits that didn’t contribute anything to the story.

Likes:
~in the beginning of the book, I was predicting things but towards the end, I didn’t know what the hell was going on. Which was great.
~Xander’s character started off as this woe is me rich boy, but started to become someone who was genuinely trying.
~The twists were genuinely well done.
~it was slow in the beginning but then it got really good fast pacing.

Overall/Final Thoughts:
3.5 stars. I would recommend it for a light cheeky read but don’t expect Shakespeare. This is a read the whole thing in 4 hours during a layover kind of book.

This had the exact summer feel I was hoping for. Caymen's wit and sense of humor were perfect, and I really liked her as a character. I wished she would have been a little less judgmental, but it made sense with her background. Cute little YA contemporaries like this make me so happy because you know exactly what you'll get, and I love that. The career days were delightful, and I smiled while reading. The doll store was also a unique setting and while I find them creepy, I did think it was fun to see that type of business. Overall, this was super cute and lighthearted, with some emotional moments thrown in, and I was here for it!

Terribly simple and superficial. There was no intrigue whatsoever, just a juvenile girl who was tortured over the fact that she was poor and her crush was rich. For a contemporary book, it was quite archaic in theme and had no significant plot or character development. The language was an appropriate level for me in Spanish, but the story was unfortunately not enjoyable. I wont be reading it again.

So... my plan was to do some hw and then read a bit and continue like that...

reality? just reading and no hw - I mean once u read about the gold flecked eyes, sarcastic humour and crooked smile HOW can you be expected to put it down??

this completely lived up to my expectations of a book written by Kasie West - just what I needed!

When I read the back of the ARC saying that it was Pretty in Pink meets Pride and Prejudice I was sold. I was thinking that it would end similar to Pretty in Pink but I was pleasantly surprised that it didn't!

Caymen was so starky and funny. She definately didn't put up with crap and I liked that about her because sometimes teens in YA literature can be kind of wishy washy. I liked the romance between her and Xander (I rooted for her to be with him and not Tic).

I can definately say this is one of my new favorite contemporary books.

Love the cover too!
