I loved seeing Hunter meet his match in Janet. Getting to see the two of them accept their flaws and overcome the challenges they faced as a couple was great. The action and drama of their escapes and escapades was well written and full of danger and fear for their lives. Seeing all the other members of the Guard come together to support Hunter and getting glimpses of the lives they are leading is awesome too. Ewen and Janet come together in a shower of sparks exploding across the page with passion every moment, whether they are loving, fighting each other, or fighting together for their lives. With everything you could ever want in a story you will find yourself laughing, crying and gasping in fear as the couple is faced with challenge after challenge that they have to overcome to find their chance for a bright future. I believe there is another book in the series coming down the line, and I’m intrigued to find out more about several of the men and see them come to terms with their perfect mate as well. The Highland Guard series is one that will keep you wondering and dying to see just how these men and women will pull off their amazing feats from one moment to the next. If you’ve missed Monica’s books, I guarantee you won’t be disappointed with this series and with this newest addition specifically.

I absolutely love the Highland Guard series by Monica McCarty. They are beautifully crafted historical romances that have really great accurate historical aspects woven in. Because this is such a long standing series I do not recommend starting here because there are so many repeating characters. Years ago Hunter shared a forbidden kiss with a woman he can’t get out of his mind. And now that Janet is the one woman he must find he can’t get her out of his mind. Janet is doing what she can to support Scotland’s king and serving as a messenger is the least she can do since she lost her sister. She doesn’t need the distraction of this handsome highland warrior but she does need his help. As they work together to deliver their critical piece of information their stolen moment becomes so much more. Can’t wait to continue reading this series!

Just...I got to the "puts her on the horse and OMG she's so hot" thing and I could continue. That set up is old and tired.

This book was a bit repetitive in plot perhaps that's what I get for reading them all in a row. There were some nice scenes and I enjoyed learning about tracking but not enough spice and the conflict keeping them apart wasn't very compelling. I do enjoy this series though and have learned a lot about Robert the Bruce and Scotland's history.

Another great read. Very keen to learn about "the informant" and Striker's story too.

Nun on the run.

Seven books in and McCarty manages to produce yet another delicious Scottish hero for readers to devour. One of my favourite species, in fact—the strong, silent type—Ewen was an absolute delight. You know, when he wasn't being a giant pain in my ass.

Famed throughout Scotland for his incomparable tracking skills which earned him the moniker "The Hunter" within Bruce's elite guard, his prowess as a warrior is without question. His social skills on the other hand, particularly where the fairer sex is concerned, are somewhat lacking, to put it mildly. He's brusque, abrupt, has no discernible soft edges, nor charm... and I absolutely loved him!

Big, gruff bear characters who find all that "mushy love stuff" uncomfortable and awkward are a bit of a weakness for me, it has to be said. There's often a soft, squishy side under all their bluster that I find irresistible, and usually only one special li'l lady capable of bringing it to the surface. Ewen is no exception to that sweeping generalisation. You know what they say, the bigger they are, the harder they fall, and it's very satisfying as a reader to watch that transformation. Of course, the fact that Ewen was hummuna hummuna hummuna drop dead gorgeous, certainly didn't hurt matters.

Speaking of ladies, ever wonder what happened to Janet, Mary (heroine from The Recruit) of Mar's sister after the big bridge explosion? Well, I can tell you she's still alive and kicking here in THE HUNTER, and is still as fearless—some people, *cough*Ewen*cough*, might say needlessly reckless, but that's beside the point—and is currently living life perilously close to the edge by being one of Bruce's "Couriers of the Cloth" (Members of the Church, or in Janet's case, big, fat fake members of the Church, who carry messages between informants back to Bruce to help with the war effort). Disguised as an Italian nun, she first meets Ewen when her life is in imminent danger, causing his protective— and worryingly for him, his possessive—side to rear its head, along with a big can of wuppass for those who are threatening her. It's not long before the two are thrust together on a journey that tests Ewen's sense of honour to the limits. I mean, she's a nun, but she sure doesn't act, speak, or look like any nun he's ever met. I actually felt really sorry for Ewen during this deception. Bless him, he thought he was going to burn in hell for sure. But it was also kinda fun being in on the secret.

THE HUNTER was a satisfying read all in all. There was plenty of action, conflict, sexual tension, and even some pretty heavy emotional scenes. While it's probably not my favourite McCarty book (I tend to like the really gut-kicking ones that have me sobbing all over my Kindle), it's certainly a great addition to the series and maintains the high standard of those preceding it. The next book is set to be called The Raider and is Robert Boyd's story. I'm hoping we'll soon be getting a "The Striker" book because after this one, I'm entirely fascinated by the sham marriage of Eoin MacLean and want to know how McCarty plans to handle that one.

I hope I've convinced you to give THE HUNTER a try, and if you haven't started this series yet and want to get the full experience, you can start with The Chief and meet each gorgeous hunk of man in chronological order, as well as enjoy learning about the historical events surrounding Robert the Bruce's reign during this time period.

Ewen Lamont never wants to be like his father who did whatever he pleased when he pleased. He was wild, loud and irresponsible. He stole Ewen’s mother from his chief just because he wanted her which almost cost the Lamont’s everything. His mother died while Ewen was young and Ewen was lucky to be fostered by a nobleman named James Stewart to whom he owes everything. Ewen is responsible and loyal. He is nothing like his father.

Ewen is part of the Highland Guard, an elite secret squad of warriors who go on missions for Robert Bruce. Ewen is known as ‘Hunter’ to the team because of his tracking abilities. He can track and find anyone. Robert Bruce sends him to find and bring his ex-sister-in-law, Janet, back to Scotland because he has betrothed her to James Stewart’s eighteen year old son. But Robert Bruce tells Ewen it is best not to tell Janet about the betrothal because she might run. She has been working for Bruce as a courier under the disguise of an Italian nun named Genna.

Janet of Mar has been secretly passing intelligence to Robert Bruce right under the noses of the English. She can talk her way out of almost anything and takes pride in her work and takes pride in her work but it is getting increasingly more dangerous with the English now suspecting clergy of passing messages to the enemy.

Ewen first met Janet months before Robert Bruce sent him to go get he. She and another nun were surrounded by English soldiers who were getting ready to rape and probably kill them. At the time, he believed she was a nun. He ended up kissing her and was horrified by his actions afterwards. When he discovered who she really was on his current mission he was relieved and angry because of her lie.

Ewen and Janet are drawn to each other but Ewen knows he can never act on his attraction to her because of his loyalty to the king and to the Stewarts and he refuses to be like his father. Janet doesn’t understand his hesitation because she doesn’t know about her betrothal and she is determined to make Ewen hers.

I really liked Janet. I cracked up at how she...not only talked her way out of bad situations but had them helping her. I liked Ewen too but he wasn’t as memorable as some of the other lead characters in previous books like Chief, Hawk and Viper. He was still sexy as hell though.
I encourage anyone who reads this series to read the author’s notes at the end of the book. She includes the actual history of Robert Bruce and writes about how she comes up with the characters for her stories.
