The more things have changed in the 100 plus years since Lenin published this essay, the more they have stayed the same. Monopoly capitalism remains the order of the day for much of the globe, and the finance capital of a handful of economically-developed nations (in an unsteady coalition dominated by the USA) still exploits the raw materials and labor of lesser developed nations (mostly in Asia, Africa, and Latin America). These formerly colonized nations might not be official colonies anymore, but they are still coerced and dominated via predatory loans, economic sanctions, or outright military invasions, often under the guise of promoting such lofty ideals as “freedom” and “democracy.”
With his usual venom and wit, Vladimir Lenin strips bare the mask of nobility that obscures the inherent exploitation of the imperial system. In ten concise yet monumental chapters, he details the system’s origins, evolution, and modus operandi, by the final page effectively prophesizing our current era of endless wars of capitalist expansion.
The material is best understood with some knowledge of Marxist theory, and early 20th century world history, but these are by no means prerequisites. Lenin’s analysis of empire has inspired the popular liberation movements of many a nation state, and perhaps this accessibility is why the bourgeois apologists of the blood-soaked economic arrangement of imperialism have spent the past 100 years trying to demonize him.

Another banger by Lenin. Might as well have been written yesterday with how accurate his predictions regarding the progression of capitalism were. Crucial in building understanding as to why capitalism cannot be fixed through social democratic reforms and how the current system of unequal exchange between the global north and south came to be. (All my homies hate Kautsky)
