This is one of my first poetry collections, and I felt the poems were easy to digest- as I usually find poetry very complicated. The themes covered in this book felt incredibly raw and real. My favourite aspects of this collection were Kate's poems about womanhood and motherhood. The complexity of being so wholly devoted to a child, I felt I appreciated her perspective of a mother that wasn't all just rainbows and sunshine. All in all, I felt this was a solid piece of work.

favorite ones: college boy, plot lines for female leads, female candidate, fat girl, things men say to me, like a wife, motherload, the martian. And I even love the author's note, so witty.

Being a wife and mother is hard. Having a poet's take on the day-to-day challenges in a literal sense rather than an ethereal one somehow seems more novel. I enjoyed this for its inviting take on real difficulties. There's more a sense of immediacy here than conceptual spirituality of either role. These are true frustrations indicative of the moment, not necessarily the prospect of what such circumstances could or should mean. It's as if you're following her through car rides, dinner parties, and self-evaluations in the bathroom mirror. She's got a fun angle on life.
