Five things about The Spring Girls by Anna Todd 2.5/5⭐️s

1. So…this had potential. I chose to read it as a nod to one of my favorite books, Little Woman by Louisa May Alcott. And it does nod toward Little Women. I feel like it started stronger than it finished.
2. First off, it attempts to write chapters from each sister’s perspective. Do there will be a joe chapter followed by an Amy chapter followed by a Meg and so on…but the voices never change. If the chapters weren’t named after the speakers it would be very difficult to figure out who is speaking.
3. You’d have to do it by event alone and for the first 2/3rds of the book that might almost be possible if you’re familiar with Little Women but then the book diverges from the original greatly. Which is fine…good even…if it didn’t feel so much like fan fiction and childhood wish fulfillment. The things that change kind of nullify the actual power of the original instead of enhance it.
4. If I knew nothing about Little Woman this would have been a comfortable YA romance/family drama with an overly convenient ending.
5. The best thing about this was the setting…four sisters growing up on a military base with their mom while they’re dad’s on the field. Pure genius.

I really liked the story and I would have given the book a 4stars review, if the end hadn't been so fast and kinda stupid...

I really liked the dynamic between the sisters. Its not the happy bestfriends relationship, but a very real and shifting dynamic.

As I suspected, fans of Little Women will either love or loathe this retelling. Those who will remember that the Marches were quite modern and forward for their times will appreciate some changes which are off-putting to others, such as the swearing and the sex. Some updates are hilarious, such as the references to Spanx and how the girls use technology, but others seem random and arbitrary. Why set in New Orleans? Why Spring, not March?

Overall, this book is just mediocre at best.

Not the retelling I wanted or needed. The girls were awful.

While I love Little Women and I loved the premise of this story it was still kinda awkward seeing my beloved characters in this setting.
I did love however that Jo and Laurie actually get together in this version!

Nearly all of Anna Todd's books have been a massive miss for me and The Spring Girls is no different. I know, I know, you guys are rolling your eyes at me. It's fine. It's just that I felt that the reason why I couldn't get into this was it felt less like a retelling than it should have. Retellings, the good kind, should feel familiar and unique all at once. This felt cold and hollow.

It's a difficult task to take on a classic and I applaud anyone who does so, even if I don't personally connect with it. So while I think Anna Todd took a great risk at this, and many of her longtime fans will appreciate it, this book was not enjoyable for me.

If I'm being honest, it felt like Todd simply didn't understand most of the characters as they were in their original form, which led to it being a bit patchy on paper and in the end, it didn't translate well. There's this rushed feeling to it that makes you wonder how much work actually went into it, and if it could have been better if they'd taken a bit more time and care with the original story.

Because of this, I was never going to finish reading it. Even though I tried.

Objectively speaking, this book is a lot better than After. Maybe it would have stood better on its own, as a work of fiction unrelated to Little Women and edited a bit more thoroughly. I don't know.

While I am not going to bash Todd's prose or any of that (compared to many of her contemporaries, and even her previous works, her writing is much more solid) but I will say that this story dragged, seemed out of touch and just didn't work for me. At. All.

If you’re looking for a Little Women retelling, this is not it.

The characters were horrible people and horrible to each other. Every one of them was self-centered, and there was no growth in any of them. Usually, when I am reading a retelling, I expect the plot of the characterizations or the themes to stay the same (or similar). Not so here. Was the original even consulted?

Couldn't waste my time reading this. Wanted to love it, but was so bored!
