Audio-book performance was enjoyable.

Interesting story. Chose book because it was on sale on Audible, had pretty good reviews, and I, for some reason, thought the book was only about race & racism, not realizing that although that was part of it, much was about the domestic/intimate partner violence between her mother and step-father.

I though the Nathasha Trethewey was a talented, yet haunted, author with her analogies. I did not enjoy listening to the telephone transcripts. Such a tragic story.

This was a very beautifully written memoir. I felt like I didn’t want to stop listening/reading. The writing style made it easy for me to navigate through the heavy subject matter. Check triggers before diving in this one. The author did a good job taking us along the journey as someone who went through the events and as someone who observed a lot of went on as well. It was very interesting. Strongly recommend. 5 stars ⭐️

Slow beginning, but as the book moves along until the end- you can see childhood trauma. Children remember most everything, repress over 1 month or 30 years it still affects them significantly. She is a very skilled writer. I did not give it 5 stars, because of the story not the writing .

Natasha Trethaway is a poet and she uses her gift of language to tell her heartbreaking story. This is one of the best memoirs I have ever read. Her writing is beautiful and evocative. She writes about her childhood and growing up biracial, her relationship with her mother and the abuse by her stepfather. She confronts and examines the tragic stalking and killing of her mother by that same abusive stepfather. Her writing at times took my breath away. I felt her grief and her guilt. She also includes transcripts of phone conversations between her mother and stepfather and knowing what was to come I found them to be come of the most chilling things I have ever read. I cannot recommend this memoir highly enough. I feel it is destined to be regarded as one of the best.
