LOVEd It! I gave it 4.5 because there was something missing. I can't put my finger on it. And also I'm not that eager to read the second book. I don't know. Still thoroughly enjoyed it though!

Het was in het begin vooral heel verwarrend maar daarna werd het toch best wel spannend. Het is alleen een beetje ongeloofwaardig dat deze kiddos 13 zijn...

This British import features a thirteen year old boy born just past the stroke of midnight of the millennium. An insane nutter who believes he is meant to rule the world searches for the babies born on this day because he fears that one of them is his nemesis, the savior who could end him. Twelve have died at his behest at the hands of his faithful followers known as "The People." Only Adam remains and time is running out. If the boy survives to his 14th birthday, all will be lost. So begins a deadly game of cat and mouse.

This is a quick, engaging read not for the faint of heart. There is murder and mayhem and Lord Koron is a spooky, creepy villain. My only criticism is the ending which feels a bit anticlimactic and a bit rushed. The resolution is almost too easy and it's unclear how it unfolds exactly. This looks to be the beginning of a series so perhaps we'll see more character development going forward. I think this will be a good recommendation for middle schoolers looking for thrills and spine tingling adventures. 7th grade +

Thirteen is about a boy named Adam, he was born on january 1st 2000. According to a group called ‘the people’, Adam must be killed before he turns 14 so that leader Coron can rule the world.
I think the storyline in great, because there is a variety of different events and situations that are all part of the same story. I also liked the different characters, because they’re mostly unique and add to the story.
The pacing is a little to slow for my liking and sometimes the transition between locations or events isn’t very clear.
Overall, I like this book, so I give it 4 stars.

A great book honesty, perfect to pull me out of my reading slump.
However, despite being a YA novel it was childish in places. I wanted to love it but I'm old enough to get the gory details of the guy that you've sacrificed.
The whole idea of the cult looking for a boy born at midnight of the millennium was perfect but it wasn't written in an interesting way, it was all 'kill ADAM' or 'He must be a willing sacrifice' or 'Megan, must protect' 'I'll sacrifice myself' or 'omfg I killed someone' like yes duh, that's what happens when you stab/shoot someone.
And the plot twist with Megan coming to the rescue.
Weak.
The character you made her would not do that, yes she might not tell them where Adam was but she felt bad after sending a cult member to dorm 13.
So her shooting multiple people, punching another girl and pushing her out a window.
No. Megan wouldn't do that.
And also, why did you kill Simon?!?! Like that was probablyone of the only inventive and interesting character there.

As I've said, the idea was amazing and written, I would say, for tweens, who are just finding their way into the horror and murder side of reading, saying that however is based on personal experience and a young obsession of murder mystery.

Slow to start and a rushed end.

This was unfortunately a big disappointment. Despite having an intriguing synopsis and a pretty cover, I didn't enjoy this book. I didn't connect to any of the main characters, and the one character that I did find interesting and wanted to learn more about was gotten rid of.

The biggest problem I had with this book was the way mental illness was portrayed. It was a misleading portrayal, in which the reader is meant to hate the character and see them as 'evil' because of a mental illness. There was no sympathising characters, nor was anyone trying to help this person get better. I don't think that mental illnesses should be written about in this negative manner, particularly in YA books.

To rant further, I found the 'romance' aspect cringey and childish, but maybe that's just because it's aimed at a slightly younger audience. And don't even get me started on all the plot holes.

I doubt I'll be carrying on with this series, unless the sequel gets outstanding reviews and manages to redeem itself. I really wanted to like this book, but I simply couldn't. So one star for the cover (good job publishers!) and a second star for the one character who was interesting.
