I believe that this should be required reading for future teachers. None of the ideas are mind-blowing, and the author makes his preferences and bias clear, but no teacher should leave their training without being aware of the concepts and anecdotes (and what research there is) in this book. It is also worth reading for current educators (to get fired up about actually making school better) and non-educators (to realize that much of what we expect of schools is both impractical and not what we know to be best practices).

One of the best, most practicable books I've ever read.

If you don't work in education: read this book and see what some schools around the country are doing to maintain the fundamental right of every American to a quality public education.

If you work in education: it's mostly stuff you already know should be happening and that IS happening more than the author lets on. Yes, many schools are obsessed with the standardized tests. And yes, most of those schools have teachers who close the door and do what works while administration is either too clueless to notice or looks the other way.
