The Wonder Spot

I love the way Melissa writes. Great story very relatable.

I think my girlfriend summed up this book and its place in the world better than I could. So, to quote her: "Curtis Sittenfeld gave it a terrible review and called it chick lit. But it does a lot of the same things that her books do. True, The Wonder Spot doesn't go quite as deep, but it's also much funnier."

The Wonder Spot is chick lit in that it's about an upper-middle-class woman's work and love life. If only all chick lit were so funny and thoughtful, so free of obvious prince charming plots and covers featuring pink stilettos.

Hmmm....it was ok. Kept me entertained on the train....but two weeks later and I canNOT remember too much about the story.
I grabbed the book at the Book Thing.....and decided to read it because I wanted soem random chick lit. Not chick lit....more wanna-be (but made up) memoir.... a young woman living in NYC telling her story and a barrage of different relationships.

Really...this book did not make an impression. Whoops! :(

Bank's perspective and brassy-edged sense of humor made this story of growing up and searching for love resonate with me strongly. There's a quality to her writing that reminded me of [a:Frank Conroy|59910|Frank Conroy|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1280626083p2/59910.jpg]'s work. I'm disappointed that she isn't a prolific author with a vast body of work for me to dig into.
Here's a quick sample:
My mother found the pink place card with my name and table number; she announced that I was sitting with Rebecca and the other twelve- and thirteen-year-olds at table #13, as in, Great news! Like most adults, my mother seemed to believe that a nearby birth date was all kids required for instant friendship.
I told her that I hoped she got to sit with the other forty-one- and forty-two-year-olds.

It's well written and made me think about my relationships with family, friends, and myself, but I would have liked some more action. It didn't seem like much was happening most of the time.

Ouin.... l'histoire est un peu décousue et est parfois difficile à suivre.

I waited nearly three months to receive this book from a library hold, after publicity surrounding Melissa Bank's death made me curious. Disappointingly, it was not the book for me and I quit after three chapters. Reading reviews from people who are dazzled by the book, it seems like this is a book for certain people, or certain times of their lives, and it just didn't strike a chord with me in the same way. Sophie seemed disconnected and indecisive, which made me feel disengaged with the novel in turn. Rated three stars because the writing itself is good.... I just didn't care for it.
