This had a ton of potential and just fell flat. I kept waiting for the stories to connect to each other but they never really did. While I liked the main character, I don't feel that she grew or learned any life lessons. It was disappointing.
The plot, style, and protagonist of this novel were very similar to those in Melissa Bank's first novel. This time around, though, the first few chapters felt a little slow, so I'm removing one star. Sophie's lack of motivation made her one of the most frustrating protagonists I've ever encountered, and I think it's a testament to Bank's writing that I still felt for her and wanted to continue reading about her life. Bank's ingenious wit and dry humor also made a reappearance.
Not everyone is cut out to get married and have kids. Not everyone is sure what they want to be when they grow up. Life is about learning who you are and where you find happiness. It's just not the same for everyone as it is clear in this story.
I think I liked The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing better.
I'm on page 40 and I can't read this book anymore. I kept on waiting for it to get better and it hasn't. The main character already bothers me.
Do not recommend this book at all. I has high hopes and they have been dashed.

The book is nothing more than short stories centering around Sophie Applebaum. There is no ending. The characters' lives are never resolved. There are large gaps of her life missing between the stories. Some of the things in the stories make absolutely no sense. I'm very sorry I wasted 2 days reading it and trying to understand it.

I’m being generous with this book because I’m reading it nearly 20 years after it was published. What doesn’t change over time is how hard it was for me to get a handle on time… what year was it? How old was she? How much time passed between chapters? It was hard to ground myself in the narrative because time didn’t seem to exist. I like the way Melissa Bank puts words together, though. I liked the characters and their relationships and that’s a necessity because anyone coming to this story for a compelling plot will be disappointed. If you don’t like these characters, or enjoy hating these characters, put the book down. Three taters 🥔🥔🥔/🥔🥔🥔🥔🥔
miss bank pls write another book the girlies are starving
