High Heat is the second book in Annabeth Albert's Hotshots Series. But it can easily be read as a standalone, and that is what I did. And it was a very readable, well paced and written story. That realistically deals with everyday issues from a person's sexuality, to health care, to spinal injury without creating stereotypes or becoming heavy or overly dramatic.

And with really likable characters, a little angst and plenty of heat I was truly engaged throughout, and I would happily read more from this author and series in the future.

I usually don't mind the miscomunication trope, but these two just didn't talk! And then they didn't listen...

High Heat is the second book in the Hotshots series by Annabeth Albert. We met Garrick in Burn Zone and he was injured, badly. It's about a year later and his legs are healing, but the spinal injury is still there and not going away. He's using crutches and a wheelchair, but still needs help. When a stray dog ends up at his house, his neighbors grandson, Rain, who is more than willing to help Garrick. He likes being needed and it's not a hardship helping the sexy smoke jumper. They fall into an easy routine, Rain walks the dog, Garrick cooks. Garrick is also training Rain for the hotshot test. Garrick is working hard to recover. He wants to get back to work. His spinal injuries also brought some sexual problems and he's not happy about it. But Rain is willing to help him with that too. Rain and his sexy, silky underpants is just what the doctor ordered for Garrick's libido. They like each other. They have fun together. But Rain is supposed to be leaving at the end of the summer Garrick might not be able to jump again, so what does his future look like? Is it possible they can become something more? I loved this story! It's one of my favorites of Annabeth's and that's saying something since I've read over thirty of her books! There was just something about Garrick and his drive, sweetness, sexiness and vulnerability and Rain's confidence, determination, sense of humor and knowing who he is! Together they are perfect for each other! Overall, I laughed, teared up, smiled, got hot and bothered and just loved every word!

He pointed to a different shirt with a single pony and Daddy, I Want a Pony under it in swirly font. "Behave"
"You're almost elderly enough to be someone's sugar daddy, old man."
"Ha. Bad boys get spankings. Might want to be nice."
"I'm getting that shirt."
"You do that."

5/5 stars!

A huge thank you to NetGalley and Carina Press for providing me with an advanced E-Arc of this title!

I have been a fan of Annabeth’s books for a while now and she instantly became an auto buy/review author for me! That being said, when I tell you that her last few series have completely stepped up and blown my mind I am not lying. Annabeth has always had a way with characters, they pull at your heartstrings and weeks after finishing these books I am still thinking of her characters. Garrick and Rain are two characters I know will stick with me for a while, their story is so beautiful, it felt so special and so raw.

High Heat is the second in her new series following Smoke Jumpers in Oregon. Now I haven’t read book one yet, but even without reading it I still adored this novel and found myself even more excited for book one. We follow Rain a 23 year old who wants to be a smoke jumper but has a reputation of never staying in one place for too long, and also never staying in one career path for too long. Our love interest Garrick just gripped my heart and held on, Garrick was a smoke jumper and took so much pride in his job, but a year ago he got severely injured during one of his jumps and is now has a spinal cord injury, he is still in PT and is learning to use crutches and his wheelchair, but is hopeful that one day he will be back to smoke jumping.

I have to say what makes this book stand out is the dedication that went into it. Now I’m not an own voices reviewer for the disability representation so definitely look at some own voices reviews, I also highly encourage you to read the authors note at the end of the book where Annabeth discusses the research she did for this book. Garrick was just such a strong and loveable character. In High Heat we are seeing Garrick, who was once a very sexually active male learn how to be intimate again. When I say I love the dedication that went into this book this was a big part for me, we get to see Garrick learn a new form of intimacy and see Rain find a new way to give someone pleasure. This book just felt raw and real like these weren’t just characters in a book, we saw all the ups and downs of their relationship, to them being okay with an age difference, to Rains constant need to move around, to Garrick trying to come to terms with this new life, and to them learning how to be together it just felt so well done.

If you haven’t checked out one of Annabeth books then I highly recommend this one! The characters, the plot, the timing, and even the setting was perfection and I no for a fact I will be rereading this in the future.

An age-gap romance with all the feels. We also get a bit of opposites attract with Garrick and Rain because they certainly make for an unlikely pair. Nevertheless, the chemistry is there in spades, and these two make good use of it. I liked Garrick in the first book in the Hotshots series, and I figured he was going to get me right in the heart with his circumstances, and boy, did he ever. Then we have the fun-loving Rain, who just fits perfectly into Garrick's well-ordered life whether he's ready or not. The only drawback was that the angst comes from one of my least favorite things, and I really wanted to shake both of them, but they're both just so darn lovable that it wasn't that big a deal to me. As I mentioned, this is the second in a series, and while this one technically picks up a bit after the events in the first book, the author gives us what we need to know so that Garrick and Rain's story can be read as a standalone. That said, once you start meeting these characters, you'll want to know the rest.

This is cute!!! I love both Rain and Garrick and think that both characters were really well crafted. Garrick's struggle overcoming is injuries and then accepting his new limitations was so hard to get through, but so important too. I love that Rain was able to help him through it all, he really was a godsend.
