2.8 ⭐️ You know when someone is telling you an interesting story that piqued your interest, but you quickly realize that they ramble on and on, skirt around the interesting tidbit and tell you a bunch of other side stories before getting to the point? That’s what this felt like.
Encouraged by other reviewers, here are my overall thoughts.
This was not for me. The story had the rambling, overt-foreshadowing, paper-thin characters I'd expect from an overly-excited D&D gamer retelling their game arc to an assorted audience.
When I say paper thin, I mean it. Not once did I feel connected to the main character. The woman lead changed from battle-maiden, to damsel in distress, to empathic caretaker to sex kitten so often and so inexplicably that I can only imagine she was actually four people, and later on in the books we learn how and why she and her sisters kept trading places.
Also, about a third (like, actually) is torture porn, which is...it's fine, I guess, but it really dragged, and I was upset that my adventure story literally had a Stockholm Syndrome fantasy play out for multiple chapters.
The world felt choppy, the bad guys were as splinter thin as the good guys and the conflict was neither original nor harrowing.
I only finished it because I was curious when the part that caused my friends to think I'd like it would start, and there was nothing--I even skipped to the pages at the very end, thinking maybe there'd be a joke or something. Nada. I'm beginning to think those friends are not actually friends, but that's probably not something I can fix with a star rating.

Agora, eu pergunto-me porquê??
Recomendo

I had trouble deciding on a rating for this book. The story line itself was interesting, even if it did sound like a drunken Dungeon Master using the instructions to a bad board game as his guide. My problem was that the dialogue was so poorly written that every character sounded like a pouting six year old. Add that to the strained black-and-white quality of good and evil and the main character's infuriating habit of explaining something that was obvious a full page ago, and a four-star story has dropped down to two. This series was recommended to me by a friend who read the German translation, and I can't help but wonder if that is better than the original.

I first read this book back in 2000. I immediately ran back to the store and bought all the other in the series printed at the time. The character depth and feeling amazes me and every time I reread the series I find myself drawn back into the world again. The characters are so amazing and you find yourself loving, hating and crying with them. Amazing book in all aspects.
