1.5★ Though marketed as something you can pick up without reading the author’s other works, I don't recommend reading this on its own as I was confused the WHOLE time I was reading this. ALL of the characters were strange, the plot made no sense, and the magic system seemed like it had no foundation of why anything happened and the romance was extremely bland. Nothing quite worked for me. (+)queernorm
The world created is magical. The story had a great pace, with a perfect mix of slow burn and excitement. The descriptions painted a vivid picture of the world. I can't wait for the next books in the series and to see what happens with the rest of the guild. The audiobook version of Maxym M. Martineau's book, narrated by Mark Sanderlin, Nick Mondelli, Jess Nahikian, and Jay Alder, is an absolute treat! The narrators brought the story to life with their captivating performances. Each character had a distinct voice, adding depth to the fantastic world. The pacing and delivery were spot-on, keeping me engaged from start to finish. I highly recommend experiencing this book through the audiobook version. It's a fantastic listening experience that enhances the magic of the story.

I enjoyed this a lot, but like others have said, don't go into Maxym M. Martineau's fantasy world here. Without having read the Beast Charmer trilogy, you'll be very confused, as a lot of background about the world and characters happens in those books.
This book would've been better had the author stuck to two POVs: the leads. The added POVs of Lena, Ozias, and Callum, for only one chapter each, added absolutely nothing to the story. And I would've liked for Kost and Gaige to pull their heads out of their asses sooner.
I liked it overall, and it kept me entertained for several hours.

This was such an interesting world to explore. The powers and magic had a good spin.
Moderate: Death, Suicidal thoughts, Violence
DNF @ 67%—like so many others, I did not realize this was a spin-off
