i don’t like cases about dirty cops. i don’t understand why eve’s the one to investigate them when she’s homicide.

but this book was good. i liked this one better than the previous case with dirty cops - “Justice In Death”. i liked how there was this elaborate scheme to take the bad guys down and how everyone worked together 24/7. this was the book to remind us how good of a cop eve dallas is.

🤎

“I’ve often wondered what sort of partner in crime you’d make, should we have met back in the day. Now I see, sadly, it would never have worked. I fear, darling Eve, you’re much too tight-assed.”
“I take that as a compliment,” she said between her teeth.
“Which proves the point.”

“Watch this, because you won’t see it often.”
Eve swiveled her hips, pumped her arms in the air.
“Would that be your happy dance, sir?”
“It’s restrained, I know, but this is serious business and requires some restraint.”

“I didn’t follow logic,” she murmured. “Even when I told myself it was inappropriate, it was impossible. I couldn’t. Everything inside me needed you, like breath. No matter what I told myself, I had to breathe. I’d been loved before. Webster thought he did even if I didn’t recognize it, even if I couldn’t give it back. And I had a different kind of love with Mavis, with Feeney. I loved them. I had enough in me for that, and I can look back at who I was and be grateful I did.”
She closed her eyes, drew him in. Like breath. “But I didn’t know how much there was, what there could be. What I could be, before you.
“Before you, there was no one I’d want to walk with. No one I’d want to sit by a little pond with. No one,” she said again, easing back to look at his face, “before you.”

“You’ve got one of the crappiest offices in Central,” Peabody told her. “It makes us proud.”
“Seriously?” Surprised, then foolishly pleased, Eve shook her head.
“You don’t care about the fancy, you care about the job. And your men. Everybody knows it.”
And that, Eve realized, didn’t merely please. It warmed her, in the deep.”

“You were my hero.”
“Oh, Jesus.”
“When I was at the Academy, when I got into uniform, I studied you, your cases like you were some mythical figure, and I was on a quest. I wanted to be like you. When you took me on as aide I was so happy, and I was so fucking scared.”
Remembering, Peabody let out a half laugh.
“Those were the days,” Eve said, and made Peabody’s laugh full.
“It didn’t take long for me to learn you weren’t a mythical figure, or the kind of hero who stun streams bounce off of. You bleed just like the rest of us, but you still go through the door. That makes you, and the rest of us who do the same, damn good cops. I learned I’d rather be a damn good cop than a hero. I learned I didn’t want to be like you. You taught  me to want to be me. You taught me and helped make me a damn good cop because you’re the lieutenant.”

“To her utter shock Baxter shifted to attention, snapped a salute, held it. “Lieutenant,” he said, and every cop in the room followed suit.
She forgot every ache, every pain, every bruise and cut. There wasn’t room with the pride.
“Good work. All of you. Good work.” She returned the salute. “Dismissed.”

I loved this one. The trapping the bad guys. The personal developments. Eve realizing how much people care about her and how much she cares about them. Peabody stepping up more in this one. The mixed up metaphors crack me up. As always Roarke is Roarke. Oh that scene with baby Bella! So cute!

Thirty-second in the In Death romantic suspense series.

My Take
Treachery in Death had me very conflicted. On the one hand, I was racing through it. I had to know how Dallas was going to resolve this one! On the other hand, when I finished it, I knew I’d have to wait forever for the next installment…wahh.

Peabody gets a nasty, nasty surprise after work one night. A surprise, which sets off a major shake-up of the department. It’s tricky and full of betrayals that could end in a lot more deaths. It gives Eve lots of scope for being nasty herself which is always fun to watch as it turns the tables on the bad guys. I do so enjoy it when the bully gets taken down! Dan Webster from IAB gets to be in on the fun (he’s got a new thing going on and it’ll be interesting to see where it takes him), which, naturally, means some flare-ups between him and Eve…and Roarke (It cracks me up how Roarke handles Webster…Robb really gets that "guy" dynamic!). And Webster’s thing is embarrassing the heck out of our kickass Eve with her puritanical approach to other people’s sex lives.

There wasn’t much of the Roarke-riches pulled on Dallas---I do so enjoy how Roarke embarrasses Eve into pretty clothes and doing the social thing. On the other hand, Eve is mellowing in, a progress which is very pleasing to observe.

I did wonder how Robb would handle the difference between being a rat and being standup with one’s fellow cops…nice job. Hit some milestones. Brought in some new characters…or added a twist to the ones we have.

Detectives Janburry and Delfino from another Division pop in and I like their partnership-other dynamics. I hope Robb brings them in again!

I’m worried about Whitney. I like him. He’s a good cop and I want him to be okay. I suspect Feeney and McNab might have opportunities after retirement…hopefully, that’s a long ways away yet. Mavis revisits her old grifting ways for a short stint while baby Bella is turning into a real ham.

Poor Roarke’s taken some nasty hits on this from Eve….poor baby…snicker… And Eve. Oh boy. Whitney's desk kinda looms there.

I loved it. I love all her books. But this one...it hit close to home. Working in the law enforcement field I've seen my share of 'bad cops'. This book introduced some new characters and helped boost some of the regulars...helping to enhance them so they can take a more prominent role in upcoming books.

I love this series. especially since you don't have to read them in order to figure out what is going on.
