This was good, but I was hoping for more. It sort of felt like a great big prologue to the story, which I suppose is meant to get meatier in the next books (I hope). I am equal parts frustrated by and enchanted by both Alizeh and Kamran...there is obviously some fire between them that needs to be further explored. I wish they were a little more reckless - it would be more exciting. At the end, I'm left feeling intrigued and maybe a bit disappointed. We'll see how the next one goes.

Oh my goodness Tahera Mafi I freaking love you. This book was everything I wanted in a fantasy from an interesting, female main character that was both formidable and compassionate, and above all a great seamstress! To well written betrayal and action scenes that left me at the edge of my seat. I loved how the author intertwined the Persian mythology. It made the atmosphere, feel lush and deep and rich with history and culture. Kamran the tortured, Persian prince and the forbidden love trope, and the betrayal ahhhhhh it’s everything I’ve ever wanted in a book series. This book was phenomenal and the twist was so unexpected. I was clutching my pearls the whole time (in a good way). I absolutely love this book and I immediately started the next one. Can’t wait to see what Alizah’s fate ends up as.

Very interesting use of Persian mythology and philosophy to construct a fantasy world with the ideas of castes, fabric arts, and Jinn interwoven. Has some Cinderella vibes.
I greatly appreciate the lack of spice.
