The world building was interesting and I liked the queer representation. The reason for the deducted stars was that the conflict(s) between the main characters could have been resolved if they just talked to each other. They had the emotional maturity of middle schoolers. That was annoying.

An absolute delight of a book; weird, quirky, funny, characters you love, a storyline that's gorgeous, and a world that could be ours but is very much not. So, so brilliantly different.

The romance was cute starting with an anonymous epistolary romance (like You’ve Got Mail). They hate each other in person but become friends through letters. The world building was a bit weird it was very hard to picture - it simultaneously seemed like an older world and a futuristic one.

Overall I enjoyed this book. Some of the common tropes are ones I tend to enjoy (e.g., pen-pal romance, enemies to lovers, mixing present and past memories to build the story). While I liked both main characters, I loved the broader ensemble (I.e., Mercy’s family, Hart’s work family, Leonard, the mail carriers, etc).

I do wish there had been more world building (e.g., better understanding equimares, why the dead set sail, how the Mail carriers knew who the letters went to and their tie to the old gods, etc). Additionally, I wish the final twist in the plot was better explained in the broader story (e.g., odd that true for all demi-gods? If not, why is Hart different?)
