Took a while to get into, but after the first 25% I could put it down.

100th book this year!

Cute enemies to lovers.

The plot? Decent. At least enough of one that I felt it was going somewhere.

The banter? Top notch. Hart is different from the typical brooding, grumpy MMC. He's a sarcastic, witty, grumpy MMC. Mercy is pretty fantastic. She's her own person in her own right (which is kinda a sad standard, but that's a different thing).

A fun, palate cleanser of a book. This was transparently inspired by You’ve Got Mail, and has the same credulity straining plot points. This has the benefit of being set in a creative (although tenuously explained) fantasy world, which adds an element of fun to the story.

The plot is simple, and the stakes are low. The time period of this book is nebulous at best, which made it challenging to read. There some mixed messages about the setting, and it made it hard to visualize. The characters are a step above the box standard romance cliches, but it’s a small step. There’s some personal growth and development, which is always nice, but it follows obvious paths.

The romance plays out as expected. There are no surprises here. And I did not like some of the emotional beats, especially from Mercy. She’s tells Hart something very specific, and he listens to her exactly, but then she’s mad and shames him for not ignoring her?? Make it make sense! But as messy as this was, I appreciated the creativity. Light and entertaining, if not groundbreaking.

Super cute. You've Got Mail meets Walking Dead
