What kind of macabre endearing goodness is this?! Loved it.
A satisfying enemies-to-lovers book with unexpectedly strong character development, world-building, and overarching plot. The epistolary element and queer-normative society also added to my enjoyment of the novel.
3.5⭐️
I do think it was an interesting take on a romance. Romance meets magical realism (ish) meets grumpy x sunshine.
Mercy and Hart hate each other for unknown reasons and it’s never really fully fleshed out why they hated each other in the first place? Some of it was worked through but I felt like “Bill didn’t like them so I didn’t like them” isn’t a good enough reason for me.
I also have issues with books making the names of regular things in life like Wednesday into things like Wardensday etc.
Overall it was a pleasant read and it was fun to see the family aspects, Mercy finally saying what she wants, Hart actually having a heart, and the bits of fantasy and mystery mixed in!
I really loved Pen and Zeddie and awww our sweet boy Leonard

I really liked it but the scene in the diner is beat for beat what happened in You've Got Mail and I wish there had been more creativity or something different about it. I got teary eyed for a minute there too. Great book and I'll read the next one for sure.
This book was a miss for me.
It read insanely juvenile, with most side characters seeming not fleshed out and annoying.
The chemistry was just not there between Hart and Mercy. It seemed like their slow burn went on forever, but then happened too fast. How does that happen??
Yes, there were some cute quips, but I overall do not recommend this book.

22 hours left in 2024 and I’m 100% sure this is my favorite read of the year.
I wish they had gone more into the thing that happened with the rival undertakers but I’m happy with how it ended.
Can’t wait to dive into the rest of them

I'm close to giving this a 4 just because the last 100 pages or so, but this was like 70 pages too long. You should definitely read it, but know it's their relationship that is pretty much the whole plot until later. I'm excited to read her second book this summer when it comes out!

Yes, the You've Got Mail parallels are obvious, but there's SO much more going on in this book. The fantasy/sci-fi (I feel like it's a hybrid) worldbuilding is really unique, the characters are fantastic, and the book really had no right to make me cry as much as it did. It had a few minor stumbles early on, but it pulled me in and finished really strong. 4.5 stars, and eagerly moving on to the next in the series.
