I started to read this book mainly due to a curiosity of what an apocalyptic book written in the late 50's would be about. Nuclear holocaust, unsurprisingly.
Instead of focusing on anarchy and the complete collapse of civilization, this story emphasizes the human aspect of the end of the world. It focuses on a group of people living in Melbourne, Australia as they await the cobalt radiation that is making its way from the Northern hemisphere where another world war had ben waged.
Considering that the book was originally published in 1957, it hasn't lost anything through the years. It definitely has a 1950's flavor, especially with the dialogue, but the chracters are rich and the story is compelling.

Expecting a post nuclear war story ,it soon became an emotional character driven one.A beautifully written story about morality , relationships & the Q of what would you do if you knew when,where &how you’d die.Caught me off guard by how emotionally invested I was by the end
