There is nothing as tedious as a fictional writer with writer's block.
The vampire was not in fact very vampire. Rather dull like the protagonist. All the characters are very dull. I do like that the relationship between the protagonist and the vampire is established as being non-starter for long term romance. That's it. Also, we're in Scotland so I know what dickhead the protagonist by going where she went.
The ending is bad. [The whole changing pov and then saying mother over and over was just being Pretentious as fuck. Probably meant to be a metaphour but who cares. (hide spoiler)] I was gonna rate this 3 stars because it's probably a 2.5 stars but it's definitely on the low side of that, especially with how it ends.
The sex stuff is boring. I mean I am asexual so often it is, but in this it's meant to be funny or charming or something. It's not much of insight of into this character. She is unlikable in her boringness. All she is oppressed lesbianism and questionable religious trauma. Her being poet just makes her the worse. There is sometimes autistic vibes but it's not explored so wouldn't recommend it on that. The protagonist's not having any real friends is due to her lack of personality.
All her actions make her unlikeable in a really boring way. The religious trauma is not done well. Everyone has religious trauma. Everyone in Scotland and Ireland carry it in our DNA, generations of fuck-up things that the churches have done. Seriously, it so much of the novel but so surface that it goes no way. She is a shallow puddle.
At least the audiobook's narrator is good. The audiobook actually had the acknowledgements so it's least accessible.

I think the style of writing had some great moments and I learnt a few new words! I defo would be interested to read the authors next book :) I think I enjoyed the latter half where we get more context on Lomie and Noelles relationship, hotel drama, etc. I grew up atheist (with Irish Catholic grandparents) this piece gave me some insight into religious guilt & how it can eat ppl up on the inside :(
I really want to like-like this book, but there wasn’t a sexual relationship…at all. So I’m a bit baffled why the back of the book describes the piece as so. It was more a Woman with a lot of issues who we later find out uses sex to self harm?well that fact kinda came outta nowhere imo. The ONE sex scene between Noelle and Moses

What was the point of the vampire plot? IMO it would have been just as impactful, if not more, if it was just an exploration of Noelle’s struggles to find herself
