Listening to the audio book made me laugh, because of the voice actors rendition of a South African accent. I have no idea what a real South African accent is supposed to sound like, but I'm not sure its what the actor playing Harold is going for.

As for the actual play, this is vintage apartheid realness. There are parts of the play that made me uncomfortable, but in a good way. It challenged my sensibilities.

It's hard to know where this play is headed in the opening, but once you get there, you end up thinking a lot more about the play than the hour or two it takes to read. The play took on even more meaning for me when I found out it was semi-autobiographical. The author also acknowledges that the way actors play "Master Harold" in the final moments of the play can show hope for change or the transformation of a boy becoming racist. While the former is what the author endorses happened in his own life, he found the latter to be an appropriate interpretation as well.
