What a horrific perspective dalliance of sexual assault, particularly of minors. We seldom experience the blindness yearning causes in the perpetrator, and though this is only alleged or imagined, it is still a deep look into potential insanity driven by lust and its repercussions - for both the victim and the perpetrator.
Perhaps the text even alludes to the idea that the sexual perpetrator is flawed in true vision, and should be also pitied, when Bezimena asks “who were you crying for?”.

Esta novela gráfica sigue las andanzas de Benny, un chico que desde pequeño parece obesesionado por el sexo compulsivamente, tanto que cuando se hace adulto su obsesión le convierte en una especie de acosador sexual. Esto es a grandes rasgos de lo que va la historia, sin embargo, las imágenes en blanco y negro de Nina Bunjevac contienen más información, más pistas de un puzzle que las que en un principio parecen. Y la nota de la autora al final de esta novela. nos revela ya por fin de que va esta historia sin tapujos pero hay que llegar al final para entenderlo del todo. Bajo el punto de vista de las andazas de un acosador, Nina Bunjevac nos está hablando de todo un mundo onirico donde la fantasia sexual y los traumas reprimidos se van revelando.
La novela está repleta de simbolismo: el cabello de Betty la Blanca, un surrealismo al más puro estilo Cocteau, los bosques, la luna, el búho, los espejos y ese voyeurismo compulsivo que no sólo nos está hablando de Benny sino de una sociedad que parece hacer oidos sordos a todos esos atisbos de violencia sexual que la habita. Impressive art work and story. You are left with so many layered interpretations of the authors intent. Very captivating.

This is not a comfy book, but it isn't meant to be. I'm not sure that the gratuitous violence depicted is justified in the reading experience, however, I am not here to police an artist's exploration of sexual violence. It certainly made me think. I'm not giving this a star rating. I would encourage everyone to read all content warnings prior to picking it up.

*big time trigger warning for this book for depictions of s*xual ab*se!!
I bought this book because the design of the cover and the illustration was gorgeous. The whole book is just beautiful to look through, each drawing must have taken ten freaking years to draw. They are so incredibly detailed and stunning.
The story is dark and I read that the author made this book to process her own trauma. Incredible power to Nina, I bet a lot of tears were shed in the making of this book.

La contraportada y todo el aparato publicitario en torno a la última obra de Nina Bunjevac prometía una radiografía psicológica del agresor sexual en forma de cuento mitológico. Lo que finalmente nos encontramos es bastante más reduccionista, centrándose en un único tipo de agresor, el que tiene algún tipo de trastorno mental que le impide separar realidad de ficción llevándole a crímenes más graves. De esa propuesta más sesuda y generalizada queda apenas ese autoengaño del agresor para convencerse de que sus víctimas en realidad sí están disfrutando de su abuso sexual, algo que la autora vivió en sus carnes en su juventud. Pero, expectativas generadas aparte, ¿es «Bezimena» un buen cómic?
La respuesta debe, por fuerza, ser doble, ya que no, esto no es exactamente un cómic, sino un libro de ilustraciones a toda página yuxtapuestas a páginas negras con diálogos en un fondo de estrellas. Una propuesta formal que trata de transmitir la sensación de "voyeurismo" que acompaña al protagonista de la historia. En ese sentido, cumple en lo artístico con un dibujo realista muy detallado y perturbador, intercalado con puntuales pasajes oníricos que nos remiten a diversas formas del mito al que se refiere el título, que sirve de marco al relato más contemporáneo. En última instancia, es esta valentía gráfica y su potente sordidez lo único reseñable de la obra, quedando su argumento en una mera anécdota desgarradora en la que pesa más la provocación que el mensaje.

I picked this up to read so many times but, knowing its subject matter, would become resistant and put it back down. The artwork of this book is extraordinary and hypnotic. The graphic nature is rendered so beautifully but the subject and story is so grotesque. Very occult in atmosphere. I really loved this but it was very dark. The author's note at the end changed my relationship to the story very instantly in a way I haven't experienced before.
