polarbear2023's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH: 6%

Wanted to like it but I'm bored and I don't see the point?

While "Housekeeping" is a beautifully spun tale with prose that is outright angelic, I wouldn't say this depressing novel is best during quarantine. Still, the way that it describes the swampy town of Fingerbone and the experience of loss and life is relatable and wondrously mystical at the same time. I really admired Marilynne Robinson's writing most of all. A review on the book itself says that the reader "found myself reading slowly. Then more slowly - this is not a novel to be hurried through, for every sentence is a delight." I find this very apt. As someone with an English degree who has read book after book and known that books can in fact be boring, this book was very not boring. In fact, the events run like a Hulu or Netflix series, as compelling as they are. But it is not really the events which hold the reader so much as it is the singular voice and quirky manner of description of the narrator. Ruth and Lucille both are given to their aunt Sylvia's custody. Ruth explores her unresolved grief about her lost grandpa, grandma, and mother throughout her experience with Sylvia, and comes to realize that Sylvia is unsuitable as a mother or guardian.

Not really a fan of feminist lit, but this book is still in my top 10. Most beautiful prose ever.
