I enjoyed this a lot. Do I think the romance was unnecessary and served insta-love a bit? Yes. Was it cute? Also yes. Otherwise, it was well put together and held enough twists to keep me interested.

4.5!

This book has a great story that leaves you guessing. At times it was a tad slow and the writing was iffy but overall great!

In a quaint seaside town in Oregon, one year has passed since a series of murders, the culprit still at large. Mac lost Connor, one of his best friends, to that killer, but now that he’s graduated from high school and is about to go off to college far from home, he’s feeling ready to finally move on. But then he finds a note written by Connor in his room in the pages of a comic book that Connor gave him the last night he was alive. Did Connor know who the murderer was? With this new piece of information, Mac starts following the clues, and recruits the help of a cute boy, the cousin of one of the victims. What they find will turn everything he thought he knew completely on its head.

I’ve only read a couple of YA mysteries/thrillers, and while I’ve loved one of them (Ace of Spades), they’ve mostly fallen pretty flat for me. But not this. This one slapped! The twists and turns weren’t wild along the way, but they built up gradually, escalating the action until it reaches a fever pitch at the end.

I wasn’t just hooked to the plot, but to the characters too. The protagonist is very sympathetic, and I loved the little romance subplot! I also think I love the Pacific Northwest as a setting. Forests, mountains, beaches, small towns, a rich history of serial killers. The book even incorporates some of Oregon’s history of smuggling liquor into its coves during Prohibition into the plot.

I have no critiques. This was just really good!
