I rarely read thrillers, so this review is coming from someone without a lot of experience. I thought a YA thriller might be a good way to dip my toe in, and I was right! This was a really enjoyable read and kept me totally engrossed all the way to the end. There were lots of twists and it never felt boring or predictable.

I actually listened to this while pressure washing the driveway and I didn't want to take any breaks so that I could find out what was going to happen! Definitely made the job go by very quickly.

Overall a solid YA thriller!

Thank you to the publisher for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Keep This to Yourself follows Mac, an 18-year-old high school graduate who is still reeling a year after one of his best friends death. His best friend, Connor, was murdered by Camera Cove’s notorious serial killer, the Catalog Killer. When Mac discovers a mysterious clue a year after the murders, he takes matters into his own hands and pursues the investigation on his own (for the most part).

Initially, I was interested in this book because it falls under the category of queer young adult fiction, which is something I normally like reading. The thriller/mystery part is what detergent, though.

But as soon as I got into the story, I found myself living for the mystery. I listened to this as an audiobook, and I constantly found myself gas thing as the story unraveled.

This novel has so many wonderful twists that are totally unexpected and is written beautifully with the conversational aspect that I love so much about you an adult fiction. And, that was only highlighted in the reading of the audiobook.

This is a book that made me look forward to getting in the car for long drives or folding my laundry then, and that is a rare thing. Thank you, Tom Ryan for giving me this amazing story. I look forward to see what comes next!

it’s really refreshing to read genre fiction with incidental lgbt protagonists but the characterisation in this one was a little weak, as was the romance, which basically happened out of nowhere with zero build whatsoever. like, they meet while investigating the murders and then they’re dating and the middle step where they actually talk and get to know each other and fall in love is just missing entirely which felt kinda lazy and i couldn’t really bring myself to care about it. it was a fun read though and the mystery itself was decently compelling (and also i figured out the twist 14 chapters before the end, which is completely unrelated to my review but i wanna flex about it so)

Last year, the small coastal town of Camera Cove was haunted by a serial killer dubbed the Catalog Killer. After their fourth murder, the killer stopped. Did they vanish? Or just finish their story? Mac’s best friend Connor was the last victim and moving on has been impossible. When Mac finds a note Connor left for him, Mac is determined to see if he can solve the mystery that stumped law enforcement.

I am on a bit of a murder mystery kick and have been inhaling these types of stories. Gorged myself on this particular title: I finished it in a 24-hour period. The close-knit group of friends was relatable. The small-town setting was so familiar I swore Portland referred to Oregon … until the reference to the incoming Hurricane then I realized it was Maine! And I just love when a mystery shocks me at the end! I did not see this one coming at all.

The only thing that brought it down a star for me was the law enforcement involvement in the story. Coming from a “cop family,” the idea of a citizen solving a crime that stumps local AND federal officers is a bit of a stretch. Then, at the end, when the police chief helps the teens concoct a story that will leave Connor as the guilty one and his own killers walking away unpunished was just too much of a stretch. I know, I know. It is fiction, it is a story, it is made-up. But this was just one bit that I could not suspend beliefs and allow to just happen as a course of the tale.

All you need to know is that I devoured this book in two days and the only reason it didn't take me longer is because I had to go to work and actually, you know, do work. I fell in love with the main character and the mystery kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time I was reading. I often feel really disappointed when I read the end of a mystery, but it wasn't the case with this book. I was actually surprised by the twist and felt super satisfied by the end. I definitely recommend this one!
