Read it for school as I'm sure most people did. It's alright; way shorter than I thought it would be. The writing is good, but it also comes across as a little bit whiney and pessimistic, and it ends up sounding like every other book written and set in that era of time. It's extremely hard to like any of the characters, which might be the point but it made it kind of a slog to read even though it's so short.

This was a very slow boring read that I had to read for class and would personally not read again.

I’m not gonna lie, this book was traumatizing, literally the only female character is called a harlot for having red fingernails, and don’t even get me started on Curly’s glove of Vaseline smh. But other than that, it’s an amazing book that has important themes about friendship and innocence.

"Guys like us, that work on the ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world… They ain't got nothing to look ahead to.”

*Backstory*

I read this last year during my freshman English class. I loved it a lot. I'm not much of a historical-fiction person, but these people felt so real.

*Review*

This book is what every historical-fiction book should be like. I wanted to finish the book in one sitting, but classes were short and we didn't get enough time throughout the class to finish it in that one setting. I read ahead every now and then and when we got to the end, I felt like I was going to cry because of how true this character felt in my mind, and I hated the ending. The book focuses on the lives of 2 young men during the dust-bowl ages and how they lived. One of them is suffering from a mental illness and one of them is the "caretaker" and how life was viewed through the lenses and ideas of life during that time period.

*Recommendation*

I recommend this to history lovers, especially recent ones that are not about war or way back when.

*Age Rating*

I recommend this book for 14+ or high school ages.

Objectively this is a good book. Personally it leaves you feeling depressed and hopeless and only makes you pity all the characters involved.
