A perfect story, no matter how violent and grim. It’s hard to overstate how well-crafted this novel is. There are about 100 reasons why it’s a classic. I can’t say I enjoyed it, but that is undoubtedly by design.

This is my second Steinbeck this year and I’m very happy I picked this one. From the beginning, we knew something major was going to happen and this book ended in a way that was expected, but we hoped wouldn’t happen. The characters were well developed and each one felt very distinct.

My modern brain could not get passed the racial slurs, derogatory language, and what is CLEARLY a story about a mentally handicapped man.
