Featuring lyrical text and lovely black and white illustrations with gold accents, this book has a cumulative pattern (as explained in the author's note) like "The House That Jack Built." Each step of the story builds on the previous, and the steps are all repeated at the end. "The House in the Night" is a gentle, almost fantasy-like bedtime story that will keep things nice and quiet before bed.

As I was reading I couldn't help but think how much the illustrations reminded me of Van Gogh's Starry Night, and wouldn't you know it... There was a place in the story where the bedroom in the house had Starry Night hanging on one of its walls.

A wonderful telling of the nursery rhyme 'This is the key of the kingdom'. Naming nighttime things that are both comforting and intriguing - a key, a bed, a book, a light, the moon - this timeless good night book illuminates a reassuring order to the universe.
