Look, the author is a fantastic writer that can make rape seem sexy and spicy, and can show the conflict that the character is feeling as she enjoys it but doesn’t consent to it.

However, non-consent is a massive turn off for me, so I did not finish the book.

Adeline, ‘The Manipulator’, is an author who has just inherited and moved into her grandmothers house, and who has a kink for being scared.

‘The Shadow’, is a 32 year old vigilante, who comes from money, had a professional poker player for a father, is a security expert, and hunts down human traffickers with his team.

The Shadow sees Adeline at a book event, is immediately attracted to her, and starts stalking her.
He scares off one suitor, kills another (who was a mob boss) and sends Adeline his hands.

While
professing to hate men who subjugate women, he sexually assaults Adeline, with a gun and oral sex. As Adeline has an orgasm during these occasions and admits her fear kink, she is very confused.

This was less of a dark romance and more of just a dark story with a romance in the background. I kept reading because although the abuse is graphic, I think the author did an excellent job of exploring trauma and how one reacts to it both during, and after. Trauma can certainly change a person but watching the fmc slowly come to terms with her experience and become stronger, while still having moments of weakness was refreshing. Far too often fmcs are written to instantly get over a trauma and move on as if nothing had ever happened. It was empowering to walk along with the fmc while she came to terms with her experiences and how she wanted to live moving forward.

1.5 ★ this was literally the most corny mc i’ve ever seen, he is not him. both of the main characters had a lot of flaws and weird moments… i found the cultish plot to be pretty interesting but all the r**e scenes in this book are really concerning and really take away any interesting parts the book made. entertaining to a very small extent

the notable POC are only:
- pedophile criminals (see first 'warehouse' scene - "kill the puto!")
- construction workers (at addy's home)
- mailman (at addy's home)
-
addy's kidnapper
(aka, another criminal)

zade is:
- the best hacker known to man (he has a fucking batcave full of, quote, "illegal shit" and a car also full of "illegal shit")
- effectively a MMA champion
- able to take a bullet without being affected in any way
- able to catch a swung blade with his bare hands like he's, idk, fucking michael myers
- rich as all hell because of course he is

zade is also "not like the other rapists i torture and kill" because he believes the woman he stalks secretly wants it. quote from a side character --> "Just kidding, dude," he assures, his hands raised in surrender. "I like my women willing."

eyyy bada bing i love "dark romance"
