Fast and easy read but heart-filling

I unexpectedly started the series with this book. I absolutely love the character development. I simply loved this book and read it in one night. I was dragging the next day but it was worth it ;-)

Lately, I have been having issues with books where the characters fell in love when they were young. Because the characters arrive on the scene already in love, there is very little narrative work done to show you why the characters like each other. That was the case here. TK and Poppy seem like two planets in their own orbit - I had no idea what they each saw in the other. They don't really mesh. I was willing to suspend belief that Poppy's parents would be that awful and that TK's mom would be even more awful. But there was really nothing to work with for TK. He didn't have a personality. And the best friend who literally threw glitter on people? How did not that get edited out? I think she threw actual glitter on other adults five times in the book. That is not a real thing that happens.

I got hooked on this book so dang fast. The writing really pulled me in! My one complaint is that I think some aspects of the story could have been cut to really flush it out and make the story move quicker. I don't think we needed the drama and tv aspects of the Lady Mustangs, but as this is the only book I've read in this series, I'm assuming that's setting up another book. Regardless, I loved it and I will read more by Alexa Martin.

First off...thank you lord! Not one hashtag in sight!

I’d rather give this one 3.5 or 3.75 stars. It’s well written and had a lot I liked! I loved the relationships between Poppy and her girlfriends. I loved Ace. I definitely smiled many times over reading this one.

My issues are similar to issues I had with Alexa Martin’s first book. We only get Poppy’s POV which I think kept the story from getting below the surface. There was an unnecessary and unbelievable plot point of her having a stalker...it reminded me of how Marlee almost gets physically/sexually attacked 3 separate times in Intercepted. Like...what? Why did we spend pages on this? There are enough other plot points to keep the story moving forward. Since we get nothing from TK’s perspective I never felt like I could fully embrace him. He did many sweet things but mostly either came across as a raging asshole or a jokester with nothing below the surface. His medical diagnosis doesn’t come into play until the END of the story which made it hard to root for him on many occasions. Without understanding there was more going on with him, his behavior came across as toxic.

I know some people felt the ease that TK took on being a father felt unrealistic, but I had no issues with that component. I had more frustration over the fact that we got no scenes of TK and Poppy discusses their lives since losing touch as teenagers. And maybe this is nitpicking, but I was never clear on why he didn’t have his phone when she was texting him as a 16 year old?? So many things felt glossed over and unexplained. Oh? You’re here now and love me and your kid? Cool cool cool...we don’t have to discuss the last decade we spent apart.

I’ll see how I feel after the next book in this series. I like a lot of what this author brings to the table, but both her books have had issues that really kept me from fully embracing them.

Out of the series I would say this was the weakest book. I’m glad I read this one last. It wild because I enjoyed TK as a supporting character in the other books but in this book where he is actually one of the main characters he gives me the absolute ick. Also thought it was a weird whiplash moment when vonnie is more AAVE this book and then just southern in others. If I would have read it in order that would have frustrated me. This book definitely made the others feel white washed from an audiobook stand point. Other 3 had me emotionally gripped and invested and adoring the characters. I’m glad you get Poppy and TKs store but it’s like this book was an afterthought even though it’s the second and there’s 2 phenomenal ones after. Very odd reader experience for sure.

I didn't like the second one as much as I enjoyed the first but that won't keep me from reading the third.

Genre: Contemporary romances; First person narratives; Multicultural romances; Sports romances
Themes: Secret baby
Character: Strong female
Storyline: Own voices
Tone: Funny
Writing Style: Richly detailed

Cute and very sexy fun in the vein of Jasmine Guillory or Helen Huong—no higher contemporary romance praise than that as far as I’m concerned—with a fun dash of RHONY vibes thrown in. Delightfully fluffy vacation read. 3.5 stars.
