Even more enjoyable on a reread, and I'm again in awe of how Sherry structures this narrative and challenges every one of our expectations and assumptions. Come for the murder mystery, stay for the romantic tension and pining.

This was my favorite installment so far in the Lady Sherlock series. I loved all the different characters who we got perspectives from and got to know more, especially Lord Ingram (though Mrs. Watson featured much less prominently and I missed her!). The mystery was intriguing and hard for me to figure out but of course Charlotte was always several steps ahead.

my one hang-up with Charlotte at this point is her view on sex and the way she propositions Lord Ingram. I don’t like her refusal to accept that she loves him and instead her choice to pursue a purely physical relationship. This also ended up being partly a ruse for the mystery of course but we as the reader know they both want that anyway. This is one of her flaws in my opinion (which I feel like is integral to the Sherlock character so take that for what it’s worth)
