After a couple of chapters I turned to the back and wasn’t surprised to find that the author hadn’t spoken to any little people. The defence is that experience in the seventeenth century is not the same as now. But the result is to disembody the protagonist. The result is that this is no more than the Adventures of Tom Thumb.

Also, this isn’t based on the story of Hudson, it is his story. Renaming him felt appropriative. Either call the character by his real name, or give him a different life.

Verdict: tainted by appropriation, lack of respect and ablism.
