I didn’t dislike this but also didn’t love it, the overall story was good but was also a little complicated and not always well explained.

✨3.5 stars. I liked this book, it was an enjoyable time. The characters were not my absolute favorites and the trans rep was eh(I mostly wished that the actual trans characters could have talked about how they felt more, rather than the cis character projecting onto them and assuming what they felt) but other than that, it was a pretty good book with really nice, flowery writing and an interesting setting.

I can see why people love this book. I rooted for these characters, and they made me cry. I can appreciate the dreamy misty vibe of the writing, where it's not quite clear where or when we are, and how much magic there is in the world.
But this is not my jam. I found the vagueness frustrating. I had multiple moments of "wait, that was a metaphor right? No, wait, you were being literal," and also, I think, a few of the reverse. Not fun for me.

This book was difficult. I wanted to DNF it so many times but I pushed through, mainly because it's 1) short and 2) for a reading challenge.
I loved the main theme discussed in the book: gender identity. I really loved the exploration of it and seeing different interpretations. It is mostly the only thing I liked about the book though.

The book has some significant good aspects, like an exploration of family dynamics, lovely trans representation and some vivid descriptions to go with it. But the writing felt so repetitive, with each theme and metaphor feeling so overused, that everything just left a bitter taste in my mouth. The beginning was promising, but by the end I was skimming whole paragraphs without feeling like anything was lost. To add to that, the resolution to the plot seemed really out of character and without the proper build up, so there was no saving grace.
The sister had just put Miel in the coffin again, but Sam said he was a boy and suddenly they were all ready to saher their deepest secrets?
