This was a very good book that took on some difficult conversations. I especially loved the ending. I did find it easier than usual for me to get distracted while listening to this book. I'm not quite sure yet if that was due to the writing, the narration, or my own scatter-brain.

The author does dialogue and specific descriptions like no other. Chefs kiss. 

Didn’t love how little actually happened in the story aside from thoughts, but Briar made this a 4 instead of a 3

The characters are beautifully realised and I felt like I could understand each of their perspectives. Close to perfect

At times I thought, oh, this is a little intense and, dare I say, scary, but it was actually systemic racism.

This book balanced humour and hope with a dark, reflective subject matter. I loved main character, Emira, and constantly rooted for her. The two side characters of Kelley and Alix are so important in the sense that you definitely know people like them and maybe you are a little bit them, but they infuriate you and disappoint you. It discusses race and privilege in such a nuanced and personal story that felt so relatable and connected.
