The discussion surrounding race gripped me from start to finish. I loved this book and everything it stood for.

it is not what i thought it would be. the characters feel very one dimensional to me and lack enough substance for me to care about them. it was incredibly difficult to read.

the saving grace of this book is how it showcases white saviorism, fetishization of WOC, and how convoluted and ingrained racism is in white people.

This book was just not for me personally and so perhaps one of the reasons why I had such a middle-rating review. However, it did touch on a lot of important themes surrounding race in America and the extent white women go to to appear as an ally when it is just a blatant expression of white saviourism and I liked reading about that dynamic between the characters.

Overall though, I had much higher expectations from the plot (perhaps influenced by bookstagram) and so just felt a little let down.
